Bridal portraits are a southern tradition that actually first originated in Europe well before photography was even invented. The bride’s family, often royalty, would commission an oil painting of their daughter in her wedding attire to commemorate this special time in her life. This tradition has evolved over the years – moving from oil paintings to photographs – and is still a time-honored tradition celebrated in the American South. Until I moved to Charleston, I had never even heard of a bridal portrait – but bridal portraits are actually my favorite now!
I love spending time with my bride before her wedding day, who typically brings her mother, sister, cousin, or best friend to the session to help out. It’s so nice to meet my bride’s support system prior to the wedding day! I feel very lucky to be able to get a sneak peek of her wedding dress and I love watching her expression in the mirror as she sees herself as a bride for the first time. The relaxed atmosphere and the time we get to spend together, celebrating her and talking about the upcoming wedding day… it’s a very special type of session, for sure.
I met up with Kathryn and her mother a little over a year ago at Lowndes Grove for her bridal portraits – and I just realized that I never shared these images! On a beautiful December day, we spent the afternoon together as I captured Kathryn in her gorgeous Anne Barge ballgown at Charleston’s most popular wedding venue. Soon after these portraits were taken, she married Thomas in a beautiful wedding at William Aiken House. Kathryn and Thomas just celebrated their one year wedding anniversary – so I thought I should get these bridal portraits posted ASAP! So without further ado, here are a few of my favorites of Kathryn’s Lowndes Grove bridal portraits…

I was introduced to Cait through former DCW bride and fellow photographer, Lindsay, who had worked with Cait previously, but was not available for her wedding day. I’m SO thankful that Lindsay connected us because I immediately fell in love with Cait and her vision for a sweet, intimate wedding celebration in Charleston. Caitlin’s parents […]
When Katie first told me about her wedding day vision – a classic brunch wedding overlooking the water at the iconic Ocean Course on Kiawah Island – I knew it was going to be such a beautiful celebration. There really isn’t anything like a Kiawah Island wedding! A custom Modern Trousseau ball gown, topped with […]
I met up with Dawn + Joey in February for their beautiful engagement session here in Charleston. They brought their two beautiful pups, Willow + Cricket, along for part of the session… and boy, did they have a blast at Hampton Park?!? I am totally OBSESSED with the photos of them walking together (below) because […]
Audra + Rahul’s beautiful traditional Indian wedding in Charleston was definitely one for the books. I absolutely LOVE everything about South Asian/Indian weddings… the colors, the attire, the music, the food, the traditions, the rituals, the family element, the dancing. There really is nothing like it and if I could specialize in shooting only South […]
From the very first time I spoke with Martha Camille, I knew that her Boone Hall wedding was going to be EPIC. I also knew that she was going to be a dream client for me – and she absolutely was! I love all of my couples, but it’s so extra special when someone has […]
When Martha Camille told me that she wanted to recreate her mother’s studio bridal portraits, I’ll admit… I was a little hesitant. I’ve never done studio bridal portraits before and I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to bring her vision to life. As a creative, I love doing things that are outside of […]
