Believe it or not, where you choose to get ready on your wedding day can have a HUGE impact on the look + feel of your wedding images. If you think about it, a good portion of your wedding gallery is comprised of photos shot at your getting ready location – all of your bridal detail shots, your candid getting ready photos, getting into your dress… all of these important photos are taken here, so the location + lighting in that space is definitely something that you should consider carefully. Your photographer and your makeup artist both deeply appreciate an amazing getting ready location because it makes their job easier if the location is chosen well!
As a photographer who prefers to utilize natural light in my photos, a getting ready location with a lot of light-colored walls and decor is always welcomed. Locations with ample natural light, large windows, french doors, or covered porches + patios are a dream. Your makeup artist will also need as much natural light as possible, so please keep this in mind as you choose a getting ready location. The last thing you want is for your makeup artist + photographer to be fighting over the one corner of the room with great window light!!
As you begin to look at your options for getting ready, keep these things in mind:
Many venues in Charleston have a bridal suite where the bridal party can get ready – although not all of them are ideal. Lowndes Grove, Gadsden House, Thomas Bennett House, and Legare Waring House are four of my very favorite places for brides + their bridesmaids to get ready because there are a ton of options for shooting details, plenty of space for both me + the hair/makeup team to utilize great light, and great locations for capturing light and airy getting ready photos. Bridal suites that lack ample space, have dated decor, dark walls (including wood paneling or wood ceilings), or that lack natural light are not ideal and should be avoided if at all possible. If you have questions about whether your venue’s bridal suite is ideal, let me know!!
In terms of hotel/rental options in Charleston, I absolutely love:
*PLEASE NOTE: if you want to use the lobbies, bars, and/or public spaces in these hotels (and probably for other hotels on this list) for photos, you will need to contact the marketing department for permission prior to your wedding day. Just because you are staying there does not automatically give us permission to use the public spaces for photos and other hotel staff members cannot grant you access. It MUST be approved by the marketing department*
If you go with a hotel, please invest in a suite if at all possible. Suites generally have way more space for everyone to spread out and they generally have more windows – and sometimes a balcony! I know that finding a great place to get ready may not be high on the priority list for many brides at first, but in my opinion, it is totally worth it to splurge on a beautiful getting ready space because so many of your photos will be taken here!! I hope this helps and if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to post them below!

Ashley + Kyle’s wedding day was, in a word, magic. These two share such a beautiful love and I am beyond thankful to have witnessed it first hand. Ashley is pure JOY in human form and she absolutely glows in Kyle’s presence. The way they look at each other and care for each other is […]
From the moment I first spoke to Sandra, I knew her wedding day was going to be something special. She had a clear vision of a day filled with special details, personalized moments, and a celebration of love that was truly unique to her and Matt’s love story. Being in the fashion world, I knew […]
There’s something undeniably magical about Charleston SC. The cobblestone alleyways, the historic charm, and the gentle breeze off of the water – which creates the perfect setting for love to flourish. When I had the opportunity to capture Hannah + Ashley’s engagement session on an overcast day this past September, I knew it would be […]
Hilton Head is a special place to Abby + Greyson, as Abby’s parents live there and she’s been visiting the area for years. I always love how the magic of Hilton Head and Sea Pines brings families together on such an incredible day. This September wedding day at Sea Pines started off with torrential rain […]
Somehow, it’s already February and I just realized that I haven’t posted my year-end recap from 2024. Yikes! Better late than never, I suppose! If I’m being totally honest and transparent, 2024 was a difficult year for me + my mindset. Self-doubt, not knowing where I “fit in”, feeling jealousy of other photographers, and not […]
I met up with Nicole + Thomas last summer for their engagement session out on Folly Beach. They found me through another one of my couples, whose wedding I photographed at Sea Pines last winter, and I was thrilled when they asked me to photograph their Charleston wedding! I loved spending the evening with them […]
