Believe it or not, where you choose to get ready on your wedding day can have a HUGE impact on the look + feel of your wedding images. If you think about it, a good portion of your wedding gallery is comprised of photos shot at your getting ready location – all of your bridal detail shots, your candid getting ready photos, getting into your dress… all of these important photos are taken here, so the location + lighting in that space is definitely something that you should consider carefully. Your photographer and your makeup artist both deeply appreciate an amazing getting ready location because it makes their job easier if the location is chosen well!
As a photographer who prefers to utilize natural light in my photos, a getting ready location with a lot of light-colored walls and decor is always welcomed. Locations with ample natural light, large windows, french doors, or covered porches + patios are a dream. Your makeup artist will also need as much natural light as possible, so please keep this in mind as you choose a getting ready location. The last thing you want is for your makeup artist + photographer to be fighting over the one corner of the room with great window light!!
As you begin to look at your options for getting ready, keep these things in mind:
Many venues in Charleston have a bridal suite where the bridal party can get ready – although not all of them are ideal. Lowndes Grove, Gadsden House, Thomas Bennett House, and Legare Waring House are four of my very favorite places for brides + their bridesmaids to get ready because there are a ton of options for shooting details, plenty of space for both me + the hair/makeup team to utilize great light, and great locations for capturing light and airy getting ready photos. Bridal suites that lack ample space, have dated decor, dark walls (including wood paneling or wood ceilings), or that lack natural light are not ideal and should be avoided if at all possible. If you have questions about whether your venue’s bridal suite is ideal, let me know!!
In terms of hotel/rental options in Charleston, I absolutely love Suite 315 (St Philip Suite) at Planter’s Inn, Hotel Bennett, Faber House, 86 Cannon, Zero George, The Waltz – 101 Spring Street, 44 Morris Street, The Dewberry, The Mills House, Charleston Place Hotel, Restoration on King, and The Cottages on Charleston Harbor. If you go with a hotel room, invest in a suite if at all possible. Suites generally have way more space for everyone to spread out and they generally have more windows – and sometimes a balcony! I know that finding a great place to get ready may not be high on the priority list for many brides at first, but in my opinion, it is totally worth it to splurge on a beautiful getting ready space because so many of your photos will be taken here!! I hope this helps and if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to post them below!

I love it when my couples opt to do an engagement session with me before their wedding day. While it’s by no means necessary, I always really love getting to know my couples before the wedding day – and I also love being able to take some epic photos of them during this special time […]
From the very first time I spoke with Caroline, I knew that her wedding day was going to be so special. With just their immediate families in attendance, Caroline + Kevin’s day was centered around family – and they wanted to begin their life together surrounded by the people who love them the most in […]
Lauren + Matt are the embodiment of pure, unfiltered JOY. The way these two look at each other. The way they smile from ear to ear when they are next to each other. Absolute, contagious, electric joy. I truly feel so lucky to have been in the presence of their love. It’s a love that […]
In May, I headed to Atlanta for Lynsey + Tyler’s romantic wedding at Summerour Studio. I knew their wedding weekend was going to be special and it absolutely was! Their celebration started with a beautiful rehearsal dinner at the Peachtree Club, overlooking the city. It was so great to meet all of their VIP’s the […]
I first met Tori back in 2016 when I photographed her older sister Kiersten’s wedding. Little did I know then that I would go on to photograph their sister Chelsea’s wedding in 2021 – and finally Tori’s wedding in 2024! Legacy clients are so special and the Stolen family means so much to me. They […]
When I first spoke to Elizabeth last June, I knew that her wedding day was going to be something special. She spoke about getting married in her hometown of Beaufort SC – first, a sweet ceremony at her local church, followed by a tented waterfront celebration filled with bright colors and palm accents. Elizabeth wanted […]
